Context
A master plan has to say something about the environment, and the temptation is to say it in general. This aspect was worked through six headings instead — climate, soil, land surface and vegetation, water, air quality, and greens and open spaces — each taken from observation to the issue it raises.
Role
Planning studio — sixth semester, in a group of three
Group studio with Harshit Panchal and V Purna Venkata Manikanta. The proposals for air quality management, for green buffers and for green areas in the Shamli notified planning area are mine, and carry my name on the sheets.
Process
The findings are uncomfortable and specific, which is the point: seven per cent of groundwater samples unfit for drinking, no effluent treatment plant anywhere in the area, no ambient air quality monitoring station in a town whose index reads severe, and two per cent of the planning area as parks and open space. The proposals answer those directly — a green belt, a twenty to twenty-five metre buffer along the new roads, and a common effluent treatment plant.
